The flu?

I am so tired! And I am hot, even though it is freezing, but if I take off my cozy robe I am freezing. And my head. Oh my head. I can’t think……I can’t afford to have the flu right now! Or whatever this is, I just can’t.

Aren’t my Guinea Hens adorable?

We have been  blessed with a mild October, and our woodstove is nearing installation. Hurray for cozy firesides, sitting around a warm  fire with the wind and snow blowing out of doors is one of my favorite aspects of winter, an opportunity to draw my family close.

We are nearing the end of twin month, Elli will be 11 on Saturday and I have yet to take pics of the two of them, life only gets busier it seems, but I am grateful for a full life, and a wonderful family.

Now to find a way to ward off the impending illness I feel is creeping up on me.

Bad flu, bad!

2013 Spirit Animal

Life refuses to molder in place, so my spirit animal has a tendency to change every year or two, this years was…….an ostrich.

Not my first choice, but upon reflection this has been the year for my inner ostrich to come awkwardly bounding out on gangly legs.

Let me ‘splain.

No we don’t have time…

Let me sum up…..

I have looked cross all year, stuck my head in the sand (under my covers really) and/or ran around kicking folks in the shin. Like, really hard.

Ya, I am really hoping for an upgrade next year, like a Lab or Golden Retriever, something cute with fantastic people skills.

Hamster Day!

Today is the long-awaited day of the hamster, I will hopefully be posting pictures tomorrow, we made it to the pet store and Felicity quickly decided on the fattest, most adorable little girl hamster available. We loaded up with everything a hamster could possibly want to live a happy and chubby  life, including a large glass aquarium versus a cage, given that we have three rodent eating  cats and a dog  that would not hesitate to pass up such a yummy (and chubby) snack, we felt it would be much safer!

Not handling the hamster for the next little while is already proving to be difficult, but we have discussed at length the proper care and feeding of hamsters.

We had so much fun with Lolly today and I am so glad that she is determined to be a responsible pet owner ( her words:)).

Oh yes, she name the hamster “The fuzz” and she will also occasionally be called “The precious fuzz” 😀

The Prince

Not half as sweet as his brother, he barely tolerates us. He tolerates us because he has a warm cozy spot in front of them fire, because I spoil him rotten and buy him all kinds of yummy kitty treats, because he likes to be scratched under the chin and because occasionally I sprinkle catnip on his favorite napping spot.

He has a fondness for peas and butter. And toes.

We call him the Prince and I have a feeling he is fully aware of his status.

So he is a snob, I love him anyway.

Photography and Kittens

I have been shooting for as long as I could remember. Growing up if I wasn’t working for kitty food I was working for film.

So I could take pictures of my cats.

Nana was allergic to cats, but I adopted any cats that came my way, converting an old play house to a kitty shelter.

Those where my passions as a kid, photography and kittens.

I now have a few more passions, my kids, Joff and ducks for instance.

( I also love sports but that is a whole nother post!)

Nowadays photography is a passion of pretty much everyone on the planet. With little exception most photo (biz) blogs I read start with one simple and over used line;

“I started photography because I wanted to take better pictures of my kids”.

Well I started taking pictures so I could take pictures of my kittens.

I have worked hard at improving my photography so I could take better pictures of my precious fur-babies.

The plus side is I am able to take pictures of my kids. I don’t have to take them to Walmart. Or Sears. Or the new photog down the block.

Although I have thought about it occasionally as taking pics of my kids can sometimes be a bit of a headache (Christmas portraits anyone?)

I just wanted to clarify.

I have six kids.

But I also have three adorable fur-baby models.

I’m just saying…….

The Neighbors think my kids are being murdered, how can kids scream for joy and make it sound like torture?

Funny story but totally true.

I didn’t finish the laundry, yep, it is still sitting on my sofa waiting to be folding. I get a reprieve though, they haven’t torn up any floor yet, I believe they are waiting for someone else to do it waiting for Tuesday. Monday we are headed to Fort Knox and the beach. Yea. Monday is the first day of summer and the kids are soooo excited so we decided to do something fun, Cindi was supposed to come also but she chickened out at the last minute. (Chicken).

Katie has a new pet. His name is Toad. He is a toad.  She has been wanting a froggy frog for a while now but when she caught a toad she decided that he is will do just fine thank you very much. We did some research and found that toads need an inch to inch and a  half of dirt in the bottom of there aquarium preferably from the same place you caught the toad, more dirt if your toad is bigger. They have to be able to bury themselves. A toad house,  we created one using bark and a small rock and Toad loves his house. Toads eat everything and anything that moves and is reasonably smaller then themselves, we have found that Toad prefers ants, he loves ants. Lastly toads need a shallow water bowl, they do not drink water they absorb it through there skin so they have to be able to get in and have a good soak. Do not use tap water as tap water usually has chemicals that your toad will absorb and possibly die. And we don’t want any dead toads.

Hot weather has arrived, I have no clue how long it will stick around for, but after having the kids lay around all of yesterday moaning about how hot they where and it was to hot to do anything and they just wanted to stay inside and watch TV, well I ended up buying a smallish pool last night and the kids have been playing in it since they woke up this morning.  I love it when $20 bucks works out just right.

Honk!

We have a Goose.

He doesn’t have a name, I call him “Get Lost Buddy or Else”  as he has a tendency to not be the nicest guy on the block. I tolerate him, feed him and let him roam the premises because he takes care of the hens and because I feel bad for the dirty rotten rat fink. He has a sad pathetic story.

He came to us with a lovely mate, they were a sweet pair, ate our of our hands and kept the neighbors up at night, charming couple really. They tried unsuccessfully to hatch a nest of goslings three times and finally on the fourth time they made it, they had goslings. Ugly and cute, the parents where proud, until a skunk or fox or weasel got in and ate every single one. The momma was heartbroken, she literally stopped eating and she faded away, we found her one day on her old nest , gone to be with her babies. The dadda goose was heartbroken at the loss of his family and we almost lost him too, then our rooster died and he took over, he has a purpose now. A flock. A meaning. The girls need him.

So I let him stay. I tolerate his occasional nips and angry hisses. He isn’t friendly anymore. He is a cynic and he doesn’t tolerate love anymore.

I let the Old Gnarly Angry Pathetic Goose stay.
